The Future of Transport in America
The future of transportation in America will be connected to the way we travel. We are seeing this trend gathering pace as more people choose to drive than any time in history. However, these new trends have consequences for how we get where and how much congestion there will be on the roadways by 2022.
A report released last week found that with the growth of digital technology, the current system of car ownership will decline sharply in 2022. The five-year age structure of Americans could see it drop below 30 percent of the population by 2035. That’s a large swath to scratch!
This means different modes of transportation will converge on major urban centers over a longer time period than ever before. This can result in traffic congestion that is unhealthier than we have experienced in decades. And it will make our personal Transportation Needs Anecdotal rather than analytical.
group 2020 project For future travelers, here is a look at some possible scenarios:
Traveling longer distances and switching more often between cities
Traveling more than three hours between cities has been shown to be an important factor in the formation of long-term CO2 emissions. This is likely to increase as population grows and the number of travel destinations is expected to increase.
Traveling shorter distances and staying in one place
Traveling shorter distances means the lower pressure in the air makes it easier for pollutants to get into the air. This is great for your health and the environment, but has a negative impact on traffic flow.
Commuting instead of driving to work
The majority of Americans work from home, which can greatly increase the amount of travel pollution. It is also estimated that commuting to work causes as much as one-third of the country’s traffic.
Living next to a transit line or walking to work
Walking or commuting to work can also be a significant source of travel pollution. Wasting time in traffic can lead to worse air quality, increased greenhouse gas emissions and increased risk of heart disease.
Travel with your pet!
Animals are able to move through traffic without having to get stuck in traffic. They are able to move through traffic with ease, which can lead to higher levels of carbon emissions.
Electric Buses
Transportation that uses electricity has the potential to reduce the amount of vehicle emissions that contribute to climate change. Currently, three electric-powered modes of transportation are used by the public—bus, car and truck—but this list is expected to grow.
Transportation Future
Transportation Future is a report produced by the National Forum on the Future of Transportation, which focuses on the future of transportation in the U.S. A report that looks at the demand for transportation in the U.S. by 2022 and the demand for different types of transportation in the country is expected to show a decline in the number of modes used by the public.
How will transportation integrate with new technologies?
When it comes to new technologies, the future of transportation will depend on the people using the technologies. The more people who use the technologies the easier it will be to integrate them. Globally, 11 of the 15 most used technologies could make a major impact on the way we get around in the future. These technologies can range from telematics to driver alerts.
Summary
Travel and car ownership are on the decline, and a shift to a more environmental-friendly lifestyle is predicted. This means different modes of transportation will converge on major urban centers in a more timely fashion than ever before. These modes of transportation can be used to get from A to B with little or no extra infrastructure needed. This, in combination with the expansion of public transportation, can reduce traffic congestion and improve travel safety.
